Pope Francis has condemed Saturday's gruesome beheading by suspected boko haram terrorists of at least 43 rice farmers in the village of Zabarmari in Borno state, Northeast Nigeria.

Villagers on Sunday buried 43 farm workers killed in the attack, while security forces search for dozens who are reportedly still missing.

Eyewitnesses described a group of men who arrived on motorcycles and beheaded around 30 of the victims during the attack which began on Saturday morning in the village of Zabarmari. Residents said at least 70 people are feared dead. 10 women are amongst those missing.

In his Wednesday General Audience at the Vatican, Pope prays for Nigeria after terror attack on farmworkers in the village of Zabarmari and appeals for prayers for Nigeria.

"I want to assure my prayers for Nigeria, where blood has unfortunately been spilled once more in a terrorist attack."

He was referring to a massacre which took place on Saturday in the village of Zabarmari, in Borno State.

The Pope lamented the death of over 100 farmworkers, many of whom witnesses say were beheaded while in the fields.

“May God welcome them in His peace and comfort their families, and convert the hearts of those who commit similar atrocities which gravely offend His name,” the Pope prayed.
