The Vatican has responded to Torchlight News inquiries on the recent resignation of the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Robert Cardinal Sarah.
The Holy see had announced in a terse statement February 20, that "Pope Francis had accepted the resignation of Robert Cardinal Sarah," but provided no details or named immediate successor.
On his Twitter handle, Cardinal Sarah known for his outspoken frankness wrote, “I
am in the hands of God. The only rock is Christ. We will meet very soon in Rome
and elsewhere."
Cardinal Sarah was until his resignation the only African to occupy such an exalted position at the Vatican under Pope Francis.
Torchlight News had sought more clarifications into Cardinal Sarah’s resignation.
“Kindly provide us with further details concerning the resignation of Robert Cardinal Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. No reason was provided for his resignation, thus leaving room for some speculations,” Torchlight news wrote on February 22.
The Holy see, in its response through its Media director, Holy See Press Office, Christopher Wells, insisted that Robert Cardinal Sarah resigned “having reached the age limit.”
His mail reads:
“Dear Torchlight News,
“We received your inquiry concerning the resignation of Cardinal Sarah, which I forwarded to the Holy See Press Office. You can read their response below.
“Thank you for getting in touch with us.
“Sincerely in Christ,
- Christopher Wells”
The accompanying mail reads,
“Subject: Re: Cardinal Sarah Resignation
“Cardinal Sarah submitted his resignation as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments, on February 20th 2021, after having reached the age limit.
Best regards
Holy See Press Office.”
Torchlight News had reported the sudden resignation of Cardinal Robert Sarah on February 21 after turning 75 years in June 2020.
