Fire razes St. Mary's Catholic Church Samaru, Zaria

A mysterious midnight fire on Monday, March 1 razes the buildings of St. Mary's Catholic Church Samaru, Zaria in Kaduna state, Northwest Nigeria, leaving the parish priest now homeless.

Narrating the ordeal to Torchlight News, the visibly shaken parish priest, Rev. Fr Augustine Isek, said he was away on a retreat at the Pastoral center Zaria when the incident occurred. "There was no electricity in the building. No other power source connected to it to say, perhaps it could be the cause," he wondered.

On whether he was suspecting sabotage, he said he was still in shock as to what really happened. "None of our belongings was rescued from the fire which started around 1:30 a.m on Monday. We are virtually homeless, and the extend of damage is collosal," he lamented.

Kaduna state has been one of the hotbeds of serial killings, arson, banditry, kidnappings and terrorism in the Northwestern region of Nigeria.

On whether his local Bishop has been informed, he said he has been briefed. "His Lordship, Most Rev Dr. George Jonathan Dodo, is aware and has directed that reconstruction of the burnt houses be commenced in earnest."

The priest is therefore appealing to well meaning individuals and societies to kindly come to their aid in order to put up an entirely new buildings since the fire affected the foundation of the old structures. Donations can be gladly received through "St. Mary's Parish Samaru Zaria, Acct: No. 2099923277 United BANK for Africa (UBA).
